Dr. Huy Lam, PhD, LPC
Licensed Professional Counselor
(469) 333-6163
Past clients have shared that the most transformative part of our work together has been developing the ability to recognize in real time the ingrained patterns of behaving that have been undermining every area of their lives, and learning the practical tools to break free from them. I offer an integrative approach to help you develop this kind of real-time vision and the ability to intervene by combining deep reflection with practical skills teaching. Whether you’re looking for couples counseling to address relationship issues or individual support to overcome anxiety, trauma, men’s issues including sex and porn addiction, or other concerns, I would be honored to journey with you.
Rowlett – Wed & Sat
As a Christian counselor, I will weave the spiritual and the psychological together in our sessions, allowing you to see biblical wisdom come alive in everyday life. One of my aims is to help you gain the ability to notice problematic thoughts and behaviors as they transpire in real time, so you can choose a different course of action. My extensive training in counseling and Scripture allows me to accompany my clients as they explore the deep psychological and spiritual insights relevant to their primary concerns, while also equipping them with practical skills to make meaningful change.
My Goal as a Christian Counselor
Regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey, my ultimate goal in therapy is to help you grow in wisdom, and, in the process, enter into an increasingly deeper relationship with Wisdom made flesh, Jesus Christ. Therapy is one of many signposts pointing in that direction – not the destination. I’m not here to sell you more therapy, but to work myself out of a job, removing obstacles so you can move on to greater things.
What I Offer in Christian Counseling
I see problematic thoughts and behaviors as ways we adapt to our environment. In other words, every symptom serves a function in a person’s life, even when it’s not working well. For example, an anger issue might stem from a history of feeling dismissed or inadequate, where anger serves to assert control or mask vulnerability. While it can create challenges, this anger has likely helped the person navigate situations where they felt powerless or unheard.
As a result, I offer an integrative approach that combines deep reflection with practical skills teaching. In this way, counseling does not merely stop at symptom reduction, but also addresses deeply ingrained patterns of behaving that are no longer helpful.
My Approach to Christian Counseling
I believe the psychological and the spiritual intertwine. Neglecting either dimension in the care of a person results in suboptimal outcomes. My training in both human psychology and Scripture allows me to examine a client’s presenting concerns through multiple lenses, enabling me to develop a holistic plan of care.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary and a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from East Texas A&M. I am currently on faculty at a local university teaching in their counseling program.
In addition, I hold the following qualifications and certifications:
- EHI Certificate in the Foundations of Existential-Humanistic Practice
- Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy
- Level 1 Person-Centered Sand Tray Training by Sheri Shulenberger, LPC, CCST-T
- Certified PREP (A Lasting Promise) facilitator
- Certified Facilitator, Christian Association of Sexual Educators
My Call to Christian Counseling
The incarnation is the ultimate act of empathy. Jesus is otherworldly, yet assumed flesh and limited Himself in time, space, and language to show us the way. By meeting us where we are, Jesus transforms us into who we are meant to be. Through the practice of psychotherapy, I get to imitate my Savior in such a meaningful way while also making a living. I call that a win-win.
More About Me/On a Personal Note
I’m involved in discipling young adults at my local church. Drawing from my training in human psychology and Scripture, I create space where young adults can encounter the deep wisdom of God’s Word for their modern concerns. I also work with dreams from a Gestalt perspective. While it’s a long way from the kind of dream intepretation practiced by Daniel and Joseph in the Bible, Gestalt dreamwork can reveal significant insights into a person’s main concern.

Couples Counseling
Couples don’t have 300 different fights; they have one fight 300 different ways. As a couples therapist utilizing Gottman and Restoration Therapy, I help spouses move beyond surface-level conflict to explore the deeper emotional and relational patterns shaping their connection.
Anxiety
Every emotion is data, even anxiety. It means when you’re anxious, your body is drawing your attention to something that needs resolution. However, in the heat of the moment, it can be very difficulty to discern what message your anxiety is carrying. I offer a grounding space where you can learn to disarm anxiety and extract the wisdom it holds.
Men’s Issues
Modern men are living in a world filled with conflicting messages about sexuality and masculinity. I offer a supportive space so men can unpack their issues with honesty and learn to ground their identity in Christ.
Sex and Porn Addiction
Sex and porn addiction are only the tip of the iceberg of sexual brokenness that is colliding with the church. In my experience as a counselor, men and women who experience enduring freedom and growth make a shift from a behavior-focused approach to a maturity-focused approach. In therapy, I go beyond helping you stop a behavior to inviting you to pursue something beyond yourself: Christlikeness.
Trauma
At the heart of the Christian story is a traumatic event: the God-man publicly tortured, mocked, and killed before those who loved Him. I offer a space where trauma survivors can receive not only psychological treatment, but also engage the profound depth of the cross. With modern therapy, we have tools to treat trauma-related disorders. In Jesus, we have a Savior who suffers with us.
